How Much Can You Lose in A Cyber Attack? The Ripple Effect of A Data Breach
Despite intensified global efforts, cyberattacks continue to increase. Every organization considers them a clear and present threat. According to IBM’s most recent Cost of a Data Breach Report, the global average total cost of a data breach is $4.44 million. In the U.S., the average breach cost more than doubled year-over-year, reaching a record high of $10.22 million. This increase reflects higher regulatory fines, higher detection and escalation costs, and more complex breach scenarios. The prevalence of remote work also contributed to breach costs, adding an average of $131,000 per incident.
These growing costs should prompt organizations to consider when—not if—they will experience an attack and how to prepare. To do so, businesses need something they’ve been lacking in most cybersecurity conversations: a deeper understanding of both the risks and the true costs of a data breach.
