Data loss prevention (DLP) technology is an essential component of today’s enterprise cybersecurity strategies, allowing organizations to detect data breaches and prevent unauthorized data transmission or exfiltration. PKWARE’s DLP enhancement capabilities integrate with your organization’s existing DLP technology to facilitate scanning of encrypted data, as well as remediation of unprotected data.

Why End-to-End Encryption Weakens DLP

Data loss prevention works by inspecting content and deciding what to do with it: allow a transmission, block it, or redirect it to someone who can judge. Every one of those decisions depends on being able to read the payload.

As organizations adopt end-to-end encryption, more of that payload becomes opaque. DLP responds the only way it can, by blocking and redirecting more often, and the cost lands on the business rather than on the attacker.

Blocking Is a Cost, Not a Control

A blocked transmission that should have been allowed produces the same outcome every time. Someone finds another way to send the file, usually one nobody is inspecting.

That is the practical failure of a security control tuned toward refusal. It does not stop the data moving. It stops the data moving through the place where it could be seen.

Giving DLP a Third Option

The gap closes when DLP gains two capabilities it does not have on its own: the ability to inspect encrypted content, and the ability to remediate by encrypting rather than by refusing.

With policy key access, DLP can decrypt and scan content that was encrypted elsewhere in the organization, then make the same informed decision it would make on plaintext. A sender permitted to share that class of information is passed through with the encryption intact. A sender who is not is blocked, after the content has actually been examined rather than assumed.

Encrypted Remediation Instead of a Refusal

The more useful case is the authorized sender who simply forgot to protect the file. Rather than blocking or rerouting, the transmission can be encrypted in flight using a public key or a unique Smartkey and allowed to continue.

The policy outcome is identical, the data is protected, and nobody has to file a request to send something they were entitled to send. Encrypted remediation turns the most common DLP event from an interruption into a correction.

What This Changes for Audit

Inspecting encrypted content is also what makes DLP reporting truthful. A tool that cannot read a message records that something encrypted passed through, which satisfies nobody examining whether sensitive data left the organization.

Being able to say what was in a transmission, what policy applied and what action followed is the difference between logging traffic and evidencing control.

Where the Friction Actually Costs Money

Every unnecessary block has a second cost beyond the delay. It teaches the sender that the control is an obstacle, and people route around obstacles. The workaround is usually a personal account, a file-sharing link or a USB drive, none of which the organization inspects at all.

A control that people cooperate with sees more traffic than one they avoid, which means reducing false blocks improves coverage as well as velocity.

Fitting This Around an Existing Investment

None of this requires replacing the DLP platform already in place. The integration adds inspection of encrypted content and encrypted remediation as capabilities the existing rules can call on.

That matters because DLP deployments carry years of tuning, and the rules are the asset. Extending what those rules can do is a materially different proposition from asking a security team to rebuild them somewhere else.
